The heart of this initiative lies in the belief that Punjabi music, often mistakenly simplified as just "bhangra", possesses an inherent power to transform workouts into exhilarating experiences. This belief stems from a deep appreciation for the rich musical heritage of Punjab, which transcends the limitations often imposed by cultural misunderstandings.


The genesis of Pungra can be traced back to the late 2000s, a time when Zumba was taking the fitness world by storm. I was inspired by Zumba's success in using Latin music to create a party-like atmosphere, and recognised a similar potential in the infectious rhythms of Punjabi music. This realisation sparked a vision: to create a fitness program that combined the exhilaration of Punjabi music with the effectiveness of a structured workout.


However, this vision was accompanied by a crucial observation: the increasing use of Punjabi music in fitness was often marred by cultural appropriation. I noticed a tendency to mislabel the music as "Indian," "Bollywood," or even "belly dancing," highlighting a lack of understanding and respect for its origins.


This observation fuelled the desire in me to create a program that not only celebrated Punjabi music but also educated people about its cultural context. The goal was not just to create a workout but to foster a deeper appreciation for the music that fuelled it.


Pungra, therefore, goes beyond being just another fitness program; it represents a commitment to cultural awareness and authentic representation. It seeks to rectify the misconceptions surrounding Punjabi music by educating both instructors and participants, ensuring that the music is used respectfully and accurately.


The heart of Pungra lies in bridging the gap between performance and exercise. Many people are intimidated by the prospect of dancing to Punjabi music, associating it solely with elaborate performances requiring expertise. Pungra aims to dismantle this misconception, highlighting the joy of simply moving to the music without the pressure of perfection.


The movement emphasises inclusivity, encouraging people of all backgrounds and fitness levels to embrace the energy of Punjabi music. It promotes the idea that fitness can be fun, engaging, and culturally enriching, all at the same time.
